So we thought we’d shine the spotlight on ourselves and explain why we ask the questions we do in interviews. What salary are you expecting? There’s nothing sinister behind this question. We want to understand what you are looking for so we can negotiate on your behalf. Please don’t believe what you read and be tempted to talk up your salary hoping that you’ll score an extraordinary pay increase next role. We have a strong idea about the companies that pay well and the ones that don’t. Be warned some clients ask us to verify your salary claims with your salary-slip. We know market rates. We know good candidates. We can tell you whether your expectations are realistic. We’ll also understand if you say you are underpaid in your current role and want more money. Some clients have salary bands. This means they can only offer salaries within a particular range.   When we ask what you’re after, we want to know whether your salary expectations match the range of roles we have on offer. Fundamentally our role is to determine whether you match the roles we have with our clients.  You’d be surprised how many people forget this. We ask three questions of any candidate when we are considering them against a role on offer: Can you do the job? Will you do the job? Will you fit the team? We ask why you have left your roles for a few reasons. We want to truly comprehend what you are looking for in your next role. If you left because you didn’t like the company, the work, the size of the team, the limited career opportunities and so on, then what we are about to say makes common sense. We are not going to offer you an opportunity or a role with similar conditions. We’ll also delve deep on this question to understand whether your stated reason for leaving “makes sense.” We ask ourselves if the reason you give is consistent with what we know of that company, that type of role and the market place. Why do you take so long to call? This isn’t a question we ask, but a question we’ve heard asked of us. Often the decision to appoint someone or even organize a second interview can take time. This is for a few reasons: someone internal appears out of nowhere someone internal makes a referral for another applicant the business restructures the employer likes you, but is not confident they have seen the best in the market the employer does not have their paperwork in order and forgot to get sign-off. the employer wants someone more senior to see you and that person is simply not available you are being hired for a newly created role. If an employer is hiring for a role they have already established, then they have a more tangible sense of the opportunity cost or the cost of lost productivity. Often for newly established roles there is less urgency as an employer has less sense of what they are missing out on. A professional resume writer can set out clearly how a previous employer evaluated their performanc e, and can then highlight any professional developments or achievements that have been highlighted during the course of their employment.Secondly, an employment agency will attempt to sell their resume writing services to the employer. In this case the employment agency may attempt to sell its services in a way that will help to land a job. They may try to exploit the fact that an employment agency is not associated with the employment of a person, and may therefore be given access to an internal database of potential employers, or that they are being paid for providing advice and guidance about jobs. The problem with this approach is that it does not generally work, and the reputation of the employment agency is tarnished. If the employment agency has set out clearly what it is offering, and has provided all relevant information, then it is unlikely to face any legal action.Thirdly, there are a number of ethical issues that arise when it comes to hiring by businesses. Questions YOU should ask at an interview 2 Flares 2 Flares Smart applicants spend a great deal of time preparing and practicing for an upcoming interview, hoping to successfully predict the questions that will be asked.  However, many times candidates pass on preparing their own questions for the interviewer, which leaves them looking like a deer in headlights when the recruiter or hiring manager asks, “Do you have any questions for me?”  In my experiences, even the poorly trained interviewers know they should allow the applicant time to fire off their own questions.  Recruiters and hiring managers expect it from the applicant, so why not use this to your advantage and make it as another segment of your interview?  Sure, many candidates will breeze through an interview never asking a question and will still get the job, but in today’s painful market, applicants need to fire with everything they have.  First off, why is it important to ask questions? Asking questions shows you’ve been active in your thinking about the position.  The interviewer might think you’ve lost interest in the opening if your not coming back at him/her with questions. Asking intelligent questions can go a long way.  Maybe in your head you responded to a previous question unfavorably in both you and the  interviewer’s  heads.  Use a few intelligent questions to possibly redeem yourself.  Asking well thought out questions will impress any interviewer. Interviewers should always do their best to present enough  information  about the company, culture, and position, but you can use your questions to probe deeper into the company.  Don’t forget, you are interviewing the company as well and need to make sure it’s a place that you can see yourself working.   So, which questions do you ask?  The list of questions below will not only bring you critical information to your job search, but also help to show your intelligence and interest in the position: Can you discuss the corporate culture, mission, and values? How would you describe the management philosophy of the organization? With so many companies laying off right now, how has this company been able to maintain the workforce and continue to hire new employees? What are the biggest challenges I would face in the first 3 months (the first 90 days are almost the hardest for a new employee)? What do you expect me to accomplish in this job? Does this position offer opportunities for advancement? Why isn’t this job being filled from within? What keeps you working here? What are the current goals of the department and company for the coming year? How soon do you expect to make a decision? If selected for the position, which process would we follow in regard to further pre-employment screening, on-boarding, communication,  etc.? Sounds silly, but make sure to listen to the interviewer throughout the entire process.  Some of the questions you’ve prepared may have already been discussed either on the phone screen or during the face to face.  Asking an intelligent question may backfire if it has already been answered.  Also, unless it is brought up, do not ask questions pertaining to benefits and perks, salary range, and earning potential.  Let them come to you on this topic, you need to flash them your interest in the opening, not your desire for some more bling.
